BARI CHANAPAR. GOOD LUCK!!! :flag: :flag: :flag:

Eurovision.tv meets Hayko

arm_hayko.jpg

Eurovision.tv has met the 2007 representative of Armenia, Hayko. Hayko will perform his song Anytime You Need in second-last position at the Final, on 12th May in Helsinki.

Hayko has quite a task to do in Helsinki when he has to live up to his Armenia's 2006 representative, André. Hayko explains how he sees his own role in this year's song contest, and he elaborates on the fact that Armenia was one of the lucky countries to receive a wildcard at the draw for the running order in March.

Eurovision.tv: You will be the second singer representing Armenia at the Eurovision Song Contest, following André's steps who achieved a great eighth place in the Final. What are your expectations? Which placing would make you satisfied?

Hayko: "It would be a total lie if I say that I don't want to win the contest. But at this stage I am more interested in having a great show on the stage rather than think about the placing. I am really concentrated on making the remarkable show and I put all the efforts into that."

Eurovision.tv: Your song Anytime You Need is a ballad with ethnic elements, a genre which has recently done very well in the contest. Have you been inspired by the success of these songs when you wrote your entry, or is it just your own original style?

Hayko: "I never thought about that before. This is my style, and I am recognized in my country as a ballad performer. You gave me just a very good hint on everything, I'm really inspired with your words and really hope Europe will like the song I present..."

Eurovision.tv: In the last few years, a good song has never been enough to win the Eurovision Song Contest. Instead, all the winning songs also had a somewhat extraordinary stage performance. What do you plan in this aspect?

Hayko: "Oh, this is really something I think about day and night. My stage director Andrey SYTCHEV and all the group I'm working with now have drafted a very interesting thing with the elements of dramatic theatrical show, which I hope will be completely possible on stage. It depends on the help of YLE first of all and our Head of Delegation promised to do her best while negotiating. I rely on the positive answer from YLE, but mostly on myself and my team."

Eurovision.tv: Why did you decide to sing the last chorus of your song in Armenian?

Hayko: "I know that there are a lot of people wondering about the sound of the Armenian language. I sing the song in English to be understood by most part of the viewers, but this last chorus is considered to be the strongest in the song, and it should be sung in Armenian for you to feel the melody of the language and bring a fresh stream into the Eurovision Song Contest. It's one chorus only, but believe me the most rememberable one."

Eurovision.tv: Armenia was one of the lucky countries which could choose their draw position in the Eurovision Song Contest themselves. Was it your own choice to sing in 23rd position, or who picked this spot?

Hayko: "I never won in any gambling or any games and during the live coverage of the draw I even told to the viewers that we can never dream about the wildcard. As soon as I said that everyone heard "Armenia!" and this was the biggest surprise for me. I could only hope that our Head of Delegation will choose a good place and according to her this was a right decision. I rely on it and I agree!"

Eurovision.tv: If you could pick the singer to represent Armenia in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, who would you suggest?

Hayko: "A hard question for me ever... Whoever it will be, I could be of any help and support and even write a song for the Armenian 2008 Eurovision Song Contest entry!"

A piece of Armenian drama

May 08, 2007 at 08:53 PM arm_rehearsal.jpgArmenia was the last country to rehearse today. Hayko performed his dramatic ballad in as both professional and heartwarming way, with a moving tree on stage.

Hayko is one of the most famous singers in his home country Armenia. In 2006, he was awarded the best male singer of the year, so it was no surprise that he ended up winning the Armenian national final. His song for the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, Anytime you need, is a powerful ballad, the last chorus of which is being sung in Armenian language.

A bleeding heart and a moving tree

After their arrival to Helsinki, the Armenian delegation had to face minor problems - the stage artists had created a moving tree, but it didn't fully survive the transport to Helsinki. Fortunately they managed to repair it so that it could be used in the rehearsal. However, the plan to use pyrotechnical effects during the performance had to be ultimately cancelled due to security reasons. The whole scene design looked very elegant, with Hayko standing in front of the red tree, the branches of which started to move towards the end of the song, when the song lyrics switch from English to Armenian language. This should resemble a beating heart. White ribbons were attached to the branches as well as to the microphone stands of the two backing vocals. They were, like the drummer and the flutist on stage, dressed in traditional costumes. The main colour on scene was red, with trees and hearts being displayed on the background. Snowflakes rushed through this red wood, which added to the atmosphere of melancholy, as much as the fog that was applied and the wind machine that makes the white ribbons on the tree wave. In the end, the heart of the singer seemingly started to bleed, soaking his white shirt in red. All in all, the whole delegation was very happy with what they saw on stage and on the screens.

A ribbon for each wish

In their press conference, the delegation explained that, in fact, Hayko's song was part of the soundtrack of the new film Don't be afraid, the theme of which is the contrast between love and war, leading to tragedy and separation. The ribbons that are attached to the tree on stage each symbolise a wish of a sad person, waiting for it to be fulfilled. To enchant the tired journalists on the very last press conference of the national delegations in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, Hayko sang songs in Italian and Spanish language, and a fast song in Armenian language to close the conference.
