Krekorian Defeats Azeri Efforts to Influence Legislators

SACRAMENTO--California State Assemblymember Paul Krekorian (D-Glendale) last week defeated an effort by Azerbaijiani government agents to solicit false statements from his fellow legislators to support an international anti-Armenian propaganda campaign.

Several representatives of the Republic of Azerbaijian, including a member of Parliament and the Azeri Consul General, as well as their paid lobbyist, were in the State Capitol to meet with members of the legislature. Among other things, the Azeri agents were soliciting legislators to sign a letter to President Aliyev expressing solidarity with the people of Azerbaijian and acknowledging what they called the "Khojaly massacre" during the Karabakh war of independence in 1992. The Azeri's lobbyist even suggested that all-expense-paid trips to Azerbaijian could be available to legislators who "understand the issues."

Within hours of learning of this effort, Krekorian contacted every member of the Assembly, including the Speaker, and every member of the Senate, including the President pro tem, to urge them not to sign the Azeri letter. Krekorian, who serves as the Assistant Majority Leader of the Assembly, wrote to each member with an explanation of the historical controversy over the Khojaly incident. Krekorian further explained that the Azeri government was attempting to use their biased view of the incident as a propaganda tool in an international effort to discredit Armenia and the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.

Because of Krekorian's immediate and forceful advocacy, only one out of 120 members of the Assembly and the Senate signed the Azeri letter. The result was an embarassing failure for the Azeri propaganda machine, which has significantly increased its anti-Armenian rhetoric throughout the world in recent months.

"The Azeri government has no business being in our State Capitol peddling their anti-Armenian prejudices," Krekorian said. "Their letter about the Khojaly incident is outrageously biased and misleading, and is nothing more than a cynical manipulation of a tragedy for propaganda purposes. Obviously, they desperately want to distract attention from the growing worldwide demand for justice for the Armenian Genocide, but they will not succeed. I'm glad that my colleagues saw through this charade and refused to be used as propaganda tools by the Azeri government."

Regrettably, one member of the Assembly did sign the letter, and that fact was quickly seized upon as a "victory" by the Azeri propagandists. Within a matter of hours, that letter was being quoted on Turkish and Azeri websites throughout the world, which applauded the author for standing up to pressure from the Armenian Diaspora and "pro-Armenian" legislators. Some of these sites even made reference to the Khojaly incident as a "genocide," thereby revealing the true propaganda purpose of this effort.

Assemblymember Paul Krekorian (D-Burbank) represents the cities of Burbank and Glendale, and the Los Angeles communities of Atwater Village, Los Feliz, North Hollywood, Silver Lake, Toluca Lake, Valley Glen, Valley Village and Van Nuys.

Azeri Propaganda Backfires at European Parliament

BRUSSESLS--A planned “commemoration of the Khojaly events,” which for Azerbaijan has become a top priority in its ongoing misinformation campaign backfired Tuesday when a Member of the European Parliament distances herself from the event.

European Member of Parliament Gisela Kallenbach (Greens, Germany), who initially had sponsored the exhibition of the “Aliyev Foundation” surprised the participants, especially the Azeris that were there only “because it was too late to cancel the exhibition,” after being alerted by the European Armenian Federation and other voices of European public opinion.

In her welcoming remarks, Gisela Kallenbach did not hesitate to say that she regretted that the exhibition did not include pictures of the anti-Armenian pogroms in the Azeri city of Sumgait in 1988, before taking one minute of silence in memory of the victims of all the conflicts of the South Caucasus. She criticized implicitly the Azeri attempt of misinformation and stated that she learned that this exhibition “could be used in order to destroy the promising and recent process of reconciliation between Armenia and Azerbaijan” and “that was absolutely not” her intention.

According to various sources, Kallenbach had been deceived by officers of her political group directly financed by the Aliyev Foundation and left the event.

“We congratulate Mrs. Kallenbach for her courage and bravery” declared Hilda Tchoboian, the chairperson of the European Armenian Federation; “it is clear that the Khojaly commemorations organized everywhere in Europe and in the United States are part of the political war rhetoric being used by Azeri leaders who aim to prevent the resolution of the conflict by historical revisionism, while masking their own crimes.”

Within the framework of a worldwide campaign of disinformation, the Baku regime is aiming to force the international community to characterize what occurred in Khojaly in 1992 as war crimes -- even “genocide.” These events -- presented as such using photos taken in Kosovo at the time--and not Khojaly--were never clarified but several sources-- in particular Azeri ones'shave attested that this was a campaign spearheaded by the Aliyev clan against the former regime of Ayaz Mutalibov to discredit his leadership and seize power in Azerbaijan at the time.

The massacres and pogroms of Armenians in Sumgait, Baku and Kirovabad, recalled by Kallenbach, were on the other hand, committed directly as Azerbaijan's response to the peaceful process by which the Armenian population of Karabakh had requested their unification to Armenia, in accordance with the Soviet constitution, which was in force at that time. These pogroms sparked the Karabakh war.

At the time, the European Parliament strongly criticized the actions of Azerbaijan toward its Armenian population, highlighting “the blockade and the aggression of Azerbaijan,” “the 300,000 Armenian refugees who fled the pogroms,” the murders of Armenians perpetrated “in horrific circumstances,” “the economic blockade of Armenia,” “the unprecedented attack against the Armenians of Karabakh” and their “right to self-determination.”

The aforementioned European Parliament resolutions are available at www.eafjd.eu

“Taking into consideration the serious incriminations that the European Parliament and the International community charged against Azerbaijan, for the first time, the Azeri propaganda machine failed in its efforts to use the European Assembly as a springboard to spread its falsified interpretation of the history,” added Tchoboian.

“The abusive exploitation by Azerbaijan of the Karabakh conflict to justify it war rhetoric and racist language of his leaders toward Armenia and the Armenians, will have to be condemned by the European Union which has a real interest with the establishment of lasting peace in the area,” continued Tchoboian.

The European Armenian Federation recalls that for several years, the Azeri regime has tried repeatedly to discredit the OSCE Minsk Group. Despite these attempts, the European Parliament constantly affirmed its confidence in the Minsk Group which takes into account the right to self-determination of the people Karabakh in compliance with international legal principles.
