Azerbaijan coach resignsVagif Sadygov of Azerbaijan became the first coaching casualty of the EURO 2004™ qualifying campaign when he announced his resignation today. Results not the reasonAzerbaijan lost 3-0 to Finland on Saturday, and 2-0 to Italy in their opening qualifier in September but Sadygov insisted that his decision was not prompted by these results.'Impossible' work"Working in such an environment is impossible," he said. "In August, I did not want to take this job. I only agreed after long negotiations - because I am an Azerbaijani. We played a decent game against Italy but determination takes us only so far. There should be planned work which nobody is doing." Sadygov added that his resignation had already been submitted to the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA).'My stay here is over'"The Azerbaijan national team is going downhill," he added. "At the moment, all efforts should be directed to the benefit of the national team. I was expecting the AFFA to do that, but I was wrong. Now, my stay here is over."Record spellSadygov holds the record for the longest spell in charge of Azerbaijan, having led the national side from March 1997 until March 1999. He then resigned before taking charge again in August 2002. The side's next qualifying fixture is at home against Wales on 20 November.
