In a second round affair, American and last year’s runner-up Andy Roddick ousted Daniele Bracciali from Italy, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(3), 4-6, 6-3. The match had been suspended yesterday because of darkness with Roddick leading two sets to one. Late in the fourth set, Bracciali was able to break Roddick’s serve and hold on to his own to close the set. In the fifth and deciding set Roddick, who hit 23 aces throughout the match, broke Bracciali’s serve at 3-2 and with an amazing diving volley at 4-2 (15-30) was able to hold serve and advance to the third round. Next, Roddick faces Russia's Igor Andreev for a spot in the Round of 16. No. 21 Seed Fernando Gonzalez also guaranteed a career-best fourth round appearance by defeating No. 11 seed Joachim Johansson 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. The clay court specialist stunned Johansson, breaking the Swede’s serve in 4-of-13 opportunities and never losing his serve. Johansson, who hit 23 aces against Rusedski in the previous round, was able to hit only nine aces in today’s match. Gonzalez will next play the winner of No. 31 seed Mikhail Youzhny and Jonas Bjorkman. Croatian Mario Ancic also advanced to the Round of 16 with an easy win over last year’s Junior Wimbledon Champion Gael Monfils, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. The No. 10 seed Ancic dominated the entire match, hitting nine aces, 23 winners and breaking Monfils’ serve in 5-of-9 opportunities. Last year’s semifinalist now faces Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

Wimbledon June 24, 2005 Safin Bows Out; Hewitt and Dent Clash Spaniard Feliciano Lopez stunned No.5 seed Marat Safin, 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-3, in the third round of Wimbledon. The Russian, who had been showing a solid grass court game lately, lost to an inspired Lopez who never trailed throughout the entire match. With the win, Lopez advances to the fourth round and faces No.10 seed Mario Ancic. Lopez has now reached Wimbledon's fourth round for the third time in his last four appearances. Lopez, who has lost only one set in three matches, went 2-for-2 on break point conversions and hit 14 aces, eight more than the 2005 Australian Open champion. Australian Lleyton Hewitt also advanced to the fourth round with a straight set win over American Justin Gimelstob, 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-5. The match featured only two service breaks -both for Hewitt - and had exciting rallies with Gimelstob diving for volleys and the Australian hitting precise passing shots. Hewitt now faces American Taylor Dent who had a comfortable win over the Czech Tomas Berdych, 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-3. Dent’s Wimbledon fourth round appearance is a career’s best. Hewitt and Dent have faced each other in the second round of the 2001 Wimbledon edition with the Australian winning in five sets.
