Updated: May 21, 2005, 10:35 PM ET Shaq's status for Monday's game still unsettled Associated Press MIAMI -- Shaquille O'Neal's availability for the start of the Eastern Conference finals was shrouded in mystery Saturday, his bruised right thigh still a source of concern. 2004-2005 SEASON STATISTICS GM PPG RPG APG FG% FT% 73 22.9 10.4 2.7 .601 .461 The Detroit Pistons aren't necessarily believing the story, however. O'Neal practiced with the Miami Heat on Saturday, participating in some 5-on-5, full-contact, full-court basketball for the first time in 11 days. He was held out of some later portions of the workout, a move designed so that he wouldn't overtax the sore muscle that has bothered him for five weeks. Still, he was noncommittal about being ready for Monday's Game 1 with the Pistons, saying he "hopefully" would be in the Heat starting lineup against the defending NBA champions. "We just have to keep playing well," said O'Neal, who hasn't played since Game 2 of the East semis with Washington. "I don't want this to be about me. I haven't been out there for a couple games, and the team has been playing well. If I play, we're going to do the same thing. If I don't, we're going to do the same thing." Odds are that O'Neal will play Monday. The Heat will practice lightly Sunday, and O'Neal is expected to participate again -- unless he wakes up to find the injury has worsened. "We'll anxiously await [sunday] and see how he feels," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. Meanwhile, the Pistons -- who ended Shaq's quest for a fourth NBA title last season, beating the Los Angeles Lakers in five games for the league championship -- steadfastly believe the 7-foot-1, 327-pound force will be raring to go when the series opens. "That's what Shaq wants y'all to think, that he's hurting," Pistons forward Ben Wallace said. "Shaq is going to be ready to play. Don't keep feeding into that. There's nothing wrong with Shaq." Added Detroit forward Rasheed Wallace: "It doesn't matter if he's 100 percent, 55 percent, he's still going to demand that double team and special attention. To me, he's the greatest player on earth." O'Neal was injured April 17 when he was inadvertently kneed by Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal while defending a drive to the basket. He hasn't been the same since, yet still averaged 18 points and 8.2 rebounds in Miami's first six playoff games. The two games he missed against Washington were the first playoff contests he sat out in his career, and being a spectator left him feeling a bit depressed -- even though Miami won both games to remain the lone unbeaten team in this year's NBA playoffs. "This is the time when I try to raise my game a little and I've been limited because of a freak injury," said O'Neal, who has career playoff averages of 26.8 points and 12.7 rebounds. "I've been kind of down because this is new to me." Teammates gave his return to the practice floor solid marks, saying he looked rested and ready. "He looks fine. He did everything that we did out there," Heat forward Eddie Jones said. "He looks good. ... This is one of those series where you've got to have your dominant player against a great defensive team." The series is one of those clash-of-styles matchups, with Detroit excelling on the defensive end and Miami finding success turning Dwyane Wade loose and outscoring opponents. Miami is averaging 106.5 points on 51.1 percent shooting so far in the playoffs, with Wade averaging 28.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 8.4 assists in the eight games. Detroit yielded its first two playoff opponents, Philadelphia and Indiana, just 84.4 points per game on 41.5 percent shooting. If O'Neal isn't healthy and on the floor, then all of Detroit's defensive energies will be focused on Wade. Tayshaun Prince, who's earned a reputation as one of the NBA's best defenders with his long arms, excellent instincts, relentlessness and solid track record against stars, will match up with Wade. "That's the enjoyment about basketball, taking on challenges and having fun with it," Prince said Saturday. At least four players -- Prince, Richard Hamilton, Chauncey Billups and reserve Lindsey Hunter -- will take turns guarding Wade. But in key situations, Prince is expected to draw the assignment. "He's our best perimeter defender," said Billups, also a second-team all-defensive player. "His length bothers a lot of people and he's more athletic than some people give him credit for. "He'll play Wade a lot, but we'll play him with so many people and in so many ways. We can't let him get in a comfort zone." On April 10, with O'Neal sidelined by a stomach virus, the Pistons held Wade to five points in 21 frustration-filled minutes and beat the host Heat 80-72. That Pistons win -- Miami's lone home defeat in its last 25 games -- proves how critical having O'Neal on the floor is to Miami's championship chances. "The true test will be how I feel tomorrow," O'Neal said. "But today was a good day. Guys were playing hard. Guys were focused. And we'll be ready, one way or another."

Davydenko Captures First 2005 Title ATP Top seed Nikolay Davydenko became on Saturday the twelfth champion of the Internationaler BTM-Power Grand Prix in St. Poelten after claiming a three-set victory over local Jurgen Melzer. The Russian needed two hours and 50 minutes to defeat the No. 4 seed 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 and recorded a second career win over the Austrian, whom he had previously defeated in Monte-Carlo earlier this year. The Russian, who is currently ranked No. 10 in the INDESIT ATP 2005 Race, seemed to have the upper hand when he led 3-0 in the final set, but the lefty Austrian came back to 3-3. They then held serve until Davydenko took Melzer’s serve in the last game. No. 4 seed Jurgen Melzer was looking to lift a first career trophy in front of his home crowd. The Vienna native, who is turning 24 on Sunday, was playing in his first final of the year and second overall career final (Newport 2003), having reached the semifinals in San Jose and Houston earlier in the season. On his way to the final Davydenko defeated Michal Mertinak, Sjeng Schalken, Felix Mantilla and Jose Acasuso while Melzer took care of Marco Mirnegg, Gilles Muller, David Sanchez and Christophe Rochus. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID: Davydenko: “It feels great to finally win a first trophy this year. This final was really difficult but I am feeling great at the moment and my confidence level is good which is the most important thing.” “Before Roland Garros this is great for the confidence although it is a little bit hard physically. The day after tomorrow I could be playing my first round in Paris and it doesn’t give me much time to celebrate and fully recover from this week." “I am off to Paris tonight, I will try to hit a few balls tomorrow in order to get used to the conditions and it would be great if I can get a Tuesday start over there.” Melzer: “I am of course disappointed, it is never easy to lose in a final 6-4 in the third. I think I played a great match and Nikolay was just the most active player at the end and that was what made the difference in the match today.” “I came back from 3-0 love down in the third set but unfortunately he didn’t let me use the momentum and he played great tennis. “ “This is definitely a great week and a confidence boost before the Roland Garros but it also means a lack of fitness in Paris. I played many matches this week, a lot of three setters and both singles and doubles, it is a lot of matches.” I am leaving to Paris tomorrow and I really hope I can get a Tuesday start over there.”

May 21, 2005 © Internationaux de Strasbourg Medina Garrigues Clinches Strasbourg Title STRASBOURG - 22-year-old Anabel Medina Garrigues won her third Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title on Saturday at the Internationaux de Strasbourg, defeating Polish teenager Marta Domachowska 64 63 in the final of the Tier III clay court event held in Strasbourg, France. In claiming the title, the 42nd-ranked Medina Garrigues brought home her biggest trophy yet. She had also won titles in 2001 and last year at Palermo, the Tier V clay court event held in Palermo, Italy in July. "The start of this year was very difficult for me because I had a lot of difficult draws and first round losses," said the Spaniard, who had advanced past the second round in just one of her 12 events this season prior to this week. "But now I have a title, so I'm very happy. This is my favorite surface so I feel good here." Medina Garrigues sealed the victory after one hour and 18 minutes on her second match point. "Marta is a good player," she said on Domachowska. "I didn't get it on the first match point, but I wasn't worried. I had to stay composed and she couldn't manage it on the important points." "I had my chances but I didn't take them," said Domachowska, who was appearing in her first Tier III final. "Anabel dictated play today. My serve was not working either so it was frustrating for me... I just wasn't in the match." "I will definitely come back and play here again. I enjoyed it very much. I feel ready for Roland Garros." Medina Garrigues began her week with a 76(3) 61 win over 52nd-ranked Samantha Stosur, then upset No.7 seed Amy Frazier 46 63 62 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, she outlasted 54th-ranked Vera Douchevina 67(2) 75 61, then reached the final with a 64 61 win over top-seeded Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy. The two had played three times previously, with Dechy winning twice, but their semifinal meeting was their first on clay. "I think I played well yesterday and today," said the Spaniard, whose win on Friday over the 16th-ranked Dechy was the best of her career. "I came here to win matches, not the tournament, then after defeating Dechy, I thought I could win the title and I did." "I'm very happy with my preparation for Roland Garros and I look forward to going to Paris." The 63rd-ranked Domachowska had a tough time making it through this week's draw, beginning with a 61 46 63 win over 285th-ranked qualifier Natalia Gussoni, then pulling out a 62 67(2) 75 marathon over No.5 seed Ai Sugiyama in the second round. In the quarterfinals, she came back from dropping the first set to beat 47th-ranked Peng Shuai 46 75 62. She had a slightly easier time in the semifinals with a 63 63 win over 53rd-ranked Madagascan Dally Randriantefy in their first career meeting. Medina Garrigues extended her head-to-head edge over Domachowska to 2-0 with Saturday's win. The two had met once before, in the second round at Indian Wells earlier this year, with Medina Garrigues defeating the Polish teenager 63 62. Domachowska also finished runner-up in the doubles event with partner Marlene Weingartner, losing 63 61 in the final to Rosa Maria Andres and Andreea Vanc in another battle of unseeded finalists. Andrees and Vanc had upset No.2 seeds Iveta Benesova and Kveta Peschke in the opening round en route to the final. Both players on the winning team took home their first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour doubles title with the victory.

Venus, Medina Garrigues Claim Titles No.1 seed Venus Williams captured the inaugural Istanbul Cup title with a 63 62 win over No.2 seed Nicole Vaidisova. Williams earned her first title since Warsaw just over a year ago and now holds 32 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles titles. Anabel Medina Garrigues topped Poland's Marta Domachowska to win the Internationaux de Strasbourg, 64 63. Medina Garrigues upset the tournament's top seed, Nathalie Dechy, in the semifinals en route to her first Tier III title.
