Из двух наших потерь одна была вынужденная: во встрече Евгении Линецкой и Марии Шараповой одна из россиянок должна была покинуть турнир. Из остальных участниц завершила выступление в Париже только Алина Жидкова. Светлана Кузнецова, Мария Шарапова, Елена Бовина, Анна Чакветадзе и Надежда Петрова, победившие своих противниц, продолжат борьбу во втором круге. Таким образом, барьер первого круга преодолели 8 россиянок из 15 принявших участие.

Much like world No.1 Lindsay Davenport on Monday, No.2 seed Maria Sharapova was also dealt a three-set affair in her opening round in Paris, climbing back from a set down to defeat Evgenia Linetskaya, 67(3) 62 64. "I really thought these are the sort of matches I play for," Sharapova said. "I would have loved to win 1 and 0. That would have been great. But when you come off the court and you feel like you were losing the whole match, and all of a sudden you pulled it out, it's those moments that you feel you've trained for and you work hard for." Yesterday, Davenport was also forced to comeback after dropping the first set against Katarina Srebotnik, eventually defeating the Slovenian, 36 62 62. After leveling the match at a set apiece, Sharapova also had to roar back from a 3-1 deficit in the third set. Linetskaya was also just a point away from increasing her lead to 4-1. "When you're down a break in the third, you're just begging for mercy," Sharapova said. "But I just tried to fight it out and tried to find a way, just an opening. As the third set went on, I thought the conditions were a little lighter and the ball flew faster. I was able to hit shots that she wasn't able to run down." The Wimbledon champion, who reached the quarterfinals last year in Paris, will take on French wildcard Aravane Rezai in the second round. May 24, 2005 Justine Needs Three Sets in Round One PARIS - Already a force to be reckoned with on the clay, 2003 Roland Garros champion Justine Henin-Hardenne increased her clay court winning streak to 18 by defeating Conchita Martinez in the first round of Roland Garros. With a scoreline of 60 46 64, Henin-Hardenne was quick to take the first set. However, former Wimbledon champion Martinez displayed her mental toughness and fought back to take the second set 64. In the end it was Henin-Hardenne who clinched the final set, taking one step forward in her quest to regain the Roland Garros title. Both players had 14 winners in the final set, but Henin-Hardenne's 11 unforced errors compared to Martinez's 19 helped escalate Henin-Hardenne as the winner in the close third set. Reflecting on the match, Henin-Hardenne stated, "I played extremely well in the first set, probably one of the best sets I've ever played." "She (Martinez) was in the court in the second set. With her big forehand, I had a lot of trouble. It was windy out there also. So at the end finally I can win, and that's the best thing for me to do. It wasn't easy. But I did expect this kind of match." Two veteran seeds were upset early on Day 2, Ai Sugiyama and Paola Suarez.
