The top seed this week at the Grand Prix S.A.R. La Princesse Lalla Meryem rolled through her first round match on Tuesday, planting a double bagel against Aussie veteran Nicole Pratt, 60 60. Li will have another veteran on the opposite side of the net in the second round as she will face qualifier and former Top 5 player Jelena Dokic, who moved into the round of 16 with a 62 62 win versus Lubomira Kurhajcova. No.2 seed Nuria Llagostera Vives also made her way into the next round, topping Moroccan wild card Bahia Moutassine, 63 64. The Spanish player will take on Luxembourg's Anne Kremer in the second round. Other seeds advancing on Day 2 in Rabat included No.4 Tathiana Garbin, No.6 Jie Zheng and No.8 Claudine Schaul. The only seeds to not move through on the second day of action were No.3 Maria Elena Camerin, who fell to Czech Michaela Pastikova, 62 64, and No.5 Tamarine Tanasugarn, a 60 63 loser to Ukrainian qualifier Olga Savchuk. Defending champion Emilie Loit, who captured the title last year when the event was held in Casablanca, took the first step in her championship defense with a 76(5) 63 win against Austrian qualifier Sybille Bammer. Also advancing on Day 2 were Chinese qualifier Zi Yan and Canadian lucky loser Maureen Drake.

Roddick Downs Costa Top seed Andy Roddick served eight aces in a convincing 6-4, 7-5 victory over 2002 Roland Garros champion Albert Costa and advanced to the third round of the Telecom Italia Masters Roma on Wednesday. The 22-year-old American will now face Fernando Verdasco, who defeated Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6(, 6-2. Ninth seeded Guillermo Coria also advanced with a punishing 6-1, 6-1 win over Nicolas Kiefer. Seeds Sugiyama & Sprem Exit Early in Berlin The first round of matches at this year's Qatar Total German Open 2005 has already produced two upsets on Day 1. No.14 seed Ai Sugiyama crashed out in straight sets against China's Shuai Peng, while No.16 seed Karolina Sprem dropped in three sets against France's Virginie Razzano, 46 61 62. Top seed Maria Sharapova headlines an exciting field at the $1.3 million Tier I event. Joining Sharapova in Berlin will be defending champ Amelie Mauresmo, along with Anastasia Myskina and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Gasquet Sounds Off French teen qualifier Richard Gasquet stormed the main draw at the Telecom Italia Masters Roma on Monday, dispatching Paradorn Srichaphan 6-0, 6-2 in only 47 minutes. Gasquet defeated World No. 1 Roger Federer to reach the semifinals of Monte-Carlo in his only other ATP-level event this year. Awaiting the 18-year-old in the second round is No. 6 seed Andre Agassi who defeated wild card Alessio Di Mauro.
