I have read many publications about the Armenian origin but it seems that the question always remains somewhat shadowed. It seems that the Armenians originally come from the Balkans and were very closely associated with the Phrygians. Also if we take a look at the Armenian language it stands somewhat alone in the indo-European grouping. In other words there are the Latin subdivision, Slavic, German and the Armenian stands alone. So I wonder if others are interested in this subject and what do you think about the origin of Armenians.RegardsKlara

Well, armenians are decendats of Hayk (or Hayg). That means the nation originated in the Ararat region, nowadays eastern turkey. There is however another theory that Armenians long time before the Urartu kingdom, actually moved from eastern europe to the region. But that might have been approximatly 3000 bc. And more over, it is claimed that they have mixed with the native descendants of Hayk. Wether this theory right is difficult to say.

Well, not quite right. There are some other languages in that group, too: Pharsi, Roma (gypsies), Hindu, and as far as I know Assirian... All those languages have the same root: the old indoeuropian (arial) language.Regarding the Armenian origin.Armenians are believed to derive from 2 tribes: Hayasa and Armens, which are traced back to ~3000 BC.The kingdom of Urartu was located on the territory of Armenia, but there is no exact information about what nation inhabitted it.The word "Urartu" is a distorted version of the Assyrian "Uru Ashtri" which literaly means "Big Mountain". The Aramean version of it is "Ararat" :) which was acquired by the Jews. The other name of ancient Armenia is "Nairi", which is also Assyrian and means "the land of rivers", it points to the part of Armenia that bordered Messopotamia where Assyria itself was located. So it is not correct to call the Urartians a nation, 'cause the name of the country came from the geographical object not the nation that inhabitted it (like America - Americans). There are some linguistic evidences that the Urartians were "pre-Armenians": Hayasas and Armens, but they are not 100% accurate.BTW, do you understand Russian?

Thanks for the interesting answers. :)Groul, yes I understand Russian but not quiet well, I am slowly forgetting it… I understand Russian better than I express myself in Russian.  It’s terrible I know. Yes I have read about the same thing that you can not call Urartians as nation because the name came from the geographical  object not the nation, I have also read the same thing regarding Armenians that the name Armenian did not came from the nation but from the geographical area. Or also some others say say that the term Armenian was wrongly applied to  Armenians because we call ourselves Hay and the term Armenians was mistakenly used by Greeks. They mixed the Hay population with the Arameen populations, they say and that is how the term Armenians originated. I don’t remember when was the term Armenian used for the first time but I will look at it …

Thanx... :)Armenia was called by the Armen's tribes inhabitting it.The name Hay came from the Hayasa tribe.Greeks had contacts with the part of Armenia which was inhabitted mostly by the Armens. That's why Armenians have two names. This is not something extraordinary. For example, Georgians call themselves Qartveli, and the name Georgia came from the name of St. GeorgeBut that doesn't mean that Georgians aren't the native population of the country.
