Top seed Roger Federer started his campaign for his first title in Monte-Carlo with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Brit Greg Rusedski. No. 2 seed Marat Safin was also successful serving up eight aces en route to a 6-0, 7-5 win over Korean Hyung-Taik Lee. British serve and volley specialist Tim Henman did not fare as well in his first round match against Mariano Zabaleta. The Argentine needed almost three hours to defeat the No. 3 seed 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Meanwhile, Croat Mario Ancic took out two-time champion Gustavo Kuerten 7-5, 6-2. The 2003 winner dropped the first set but recovered enough to advance against a difficult opening round draw in No.10 seed Jelena Jankovic, 57 64 63. A tough draw has assembled this week in Charleston for the year's first Tier I clay court event. Vardan Posted April 12, 2005 Author Report Share Posted April 12, 2005 Davenport Collects 47th Title at Amelia Island AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - For the second year in a row, Lindsay Davenport begins the clay court season with a title. The world No.1 successfully defended her title at the Bausch & Lomb Championships on Sunday, defeating No.12 seed Silvia Farina Elia, 75 75. With her third career title at the event, Davenport joins Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Gabriela Sabatini as the only three-time winners at Amelia Island. "This is a huge win," Davenport said. "Whenever I can win on clay against a really tough tournament, it gives me a lot of excitement." Despite now having a lopsided 7-1 record against Farina Elia, Davenport said she tends to struggle a bit when playing the Italian player. "I really felt I was being forced into all sorts of errors," Davenport said. "She would get balls back, and then when she would be on the offensive. She was mixing it up well with hard shots and drop shots and angles. I felt like she was the reason I didn’t play my best." Davenport's first title at Amelia Island came in 1997 when she defeated Mary Pierce in straight sets. She returned to the championship match in 2003, but fell to Elena Dementieva in three sets. The following year, Davenport collected her second title at the tournament with a 62 64 victory against Amelie Mauresmo. Her victory also made Davenport the first player to earn more than $1 million in prize money in 2005. It's difficult to argue that there is any player in the game playing as well as the world No.1 through the first few months of 2005. She lost in the final at the Australian Open to Serena Williams and at the Toray Pan Pacific Open to Maria Sharapova. She then defeated Jelena Jankovic for the title at the Dubai Duty Free Women's Open and made her fourth final in a row at the Pacific Life Open, losing to Kim Clijsters. Davenport has now appeared in 83 singles finals on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, winning 47 titles over the course of the last 13 years. Davenport made her way into the championship match after dropping just one set throughout her week in north Florida. She opened the tournament with straight sets victories against qualifiers Kristina Brandi and Kveta Peschke and then rallied from a set down to defeat No.5 seed Venus Williams for the fourth straight time in the quarterfinals. She then dropped just three games to reach the final in a 60 63 win against No.7 seed Nadia Petrova. Farina Elia was playing in only her second career Tier II final after a strong week of action on the green clay. The Italian defeated Tathiana Garbin, Anabel Medina Garrigues and No.8 Patty Schnyder to reach the quarterfinals. She followed by saving three match points in a second set against No.2 seed Serena Williams before Serena retired due to a left ankle sprain. She followed by reaching the final with a straight sets victory against Virginie Razzano in the semifinals. "I really fought hard today," Farina Elia said. "I played really my best game. I did what I could today. I think Lindsay came up with unbelievable points in a very important game. All the time I had break points she came up with a serve, an ace." The Italian player has now appeared in 13 career singles finals with all three of her career titles coming in a three-year span at Strasbourg (2001, 2002, 2003). In the doubles final, the Australian team of Bryanne Stewart and Samantha Stosur won their second title as a team this year, defeating Kveta Peschke and Patty Schnyder in Sunday's final, 64 62. Stewart and Stosur each won their first career doubles title earlier this year at Sydney where they got a couple of breaks by receiving walkovers in the semifinals and final rounds. This time, the Aussie duo played each round and prevailed for their second career titles. "I don't know if we really let them play the way they wanted to play today," Stosur said. "They weren't really moving that much on the net. We rallied quite well from the baseline." Schnyder was looking for her fifth career title, while Peschke was seeking her fourth. Safin defeated Cyril Saulnier 6-3, 6-1 while Ferrero rallied from a set down to beat Jiri Novak 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Safin-Ferrero head-to-head Rafael Nadal defeated Xavier Malisse 6-0, 6-3 and defending champion Guillermo Coria posted his eighth consecutive victory in Monaco with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Frenchman Thierry Ascione. Henin-Hardenne survived three sets with Shuai Peng, 62 46 64, while Davenport eliminated qualifier Marie-Eve Pelletier in straight sets, 62 62. No.8 seed Patty Schnyder, No.11 Ai Sugiyama and No.13 Tatiana Golovin all moved on to the round of 16, while No.16 seed Fabiola Zuluaga was upset by Ukraine qualifier Viktoriya Kutuzova, 63 61.
