Moya Survives Scare; Federer, Gaudio, Rafa Roll On

Roger Federer took another step towards becoming only the sixth man in history to win all four Grand Slams on Friday at Roland Garros, seeing off No. 24 seed Fernando Gonzalez 7-6(9), 7-5, 6-2. Federer has not dropped a set in his first three matches and advances to the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time since 2001. The Swiss star will next meet 1998 Roland Garros champion Carlos Moya.

Moya survived a five-set marathon against close friend Fernando Vicente, 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 0-6, 6-4, winning on his eighth match point and improving to a career 12-0 against his opponent. The Spaniard, who had treatment on his shoulder during the grueling encounter, will be hoping for a first career win (0-5) over Federer in the next round.

Rafael Nadal defeated Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 for the second time this season in a highly anticipated showdown between the 18-year-olds. Nadal, the No. 4 seed, is attempting to become the first player since Mats Wilander to win Roland Garros in his debut. Nadal next meets another Frenchman, No. 23 seed Sebastien Grosjean, who got past the Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek in just over four hours 6-1, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

David Ferrer was the third Spaniard to reach the Round of 16 today after he defeated Korea's Hyung-Taik Lee 6-3, 6-1, 7-5.

Ferrer next meets reigning Roland Garros champion Gaston Gaudio who advanced routinely past Felix Mantilla today 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Gaudio has won four of their past five meetings, including two this year, but Ferrer won their last contest handily at the Telecom Italia Masters Roma 2005.
