This week, some of the world's top stars will be in Warsaw, Poland for the 10th edition of the J & S Cup, including current world No.3 Amelie Mauresmo. Mauresmo, the 2003 champion at Warsaw, will be the top seed at this year's event and looking for her second title of the season. After receiving a first round bye as one of the tournament's top four seeds, Mauresmo will face either Martina Sucha or Ana Ivanovic in the second round. Last year's runner-up, Svetlana Kuznetsova will be seeded No.2 at this year's tournament and will face either Klara Koukalova or Anna Smashnova in her second round match. Meanwhile, another Russian, Vera Zvonareva will be the No.3 seed, while Switzerland's Patty Schnyder will be No.4. 2002 Warsaw champion Elena Bovina returns to the event as the No.5 seed and will take on Maria Vento-Kabchi in the first round, while No.6 seed Nathalie Dechy will take on Magdalena Maleeva in her opening round match. Bovina could potentially see a dangerous second round encounter, possibly facing Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne. In only her second event of 2005, Henin-Hardenne got off to a good clay court start at Charleston, winning the Family Circle Cup for the second time in her career. Henin-Hardenne will take on Anna-Lena Groenefeld in her first round match. Seeded for the first time this year, Kim Clijsters will make her 2005 debut on clay after a successful return to the hard courts. The former Roland Garros runner-up is 16-1 on the season after winning back-to-back titles at Indian Wells and Miami. Clijsters will see a qualifier in her first round match. This is the 10th anniversay of the J & S Cup in Warsaw, which started in 1995 with Barbara Paulus defeating Alexandra Fusai in the first singles final. Since then, Henrieta Nagyova, Conchita Martinez, Cristina Torrens Valero, Elena Bovina, Mauresmo and Venus Williams are among the players that have captured the title at this event. Vardan
April 24, 2005 Pennetta Ready to Continue Clay Success in Estoril ESTORIL, Portugal - Rising clay court star Flavia Pennetta will headline the women's field this week at the Estoril Open where she'll look to stay undefeated on the red dirt in 2005. The young Italian player has been quite impressive on clay this season, winning back-to-back titles in February at Bogota and Acapulco - giving her a 10-0 record on clay entering this week's action at Estoril. In fact, Pennetta has won 15 straight on clay and 19 of her last 20 dating back to 2004. Her last defeat on clay came at Palermo where she fell to Anabel Medina Garrigues in the final. She followed that loss by beginning her win streak on the surface when she captured her first career title at Sopot. Pennetta will be returning this week after missing a scheduled trip to Charleston and also Italy's first round Fed Cup tie against Russia due to a foot injury. Her foot will be tested in her first round match when she takes on Germany's Sandra Kloesel. Pennetta will be joined in Estoril this week by No.2 seed Dinara Safina, who captured a Tour title earlier this year at Paris [indoors]. However, Safina's first match of the week will be against Claudine Schaul, who picked up a huge title during the clay court circuit last year, defeating Lindsay Davenport in the Strasbourg final. Also appearing in Estoril are No.3 seed Gisela Dulko, No.4 Na Li and No.5 seed Medina Garrigues. On Monday, No.6 seed Dally Randriantefy advanced to the second round defeating Portuguese wild card Neuza Silva, 62 62. Meanwhile, Alyona Bondarenko defeated Jelena Dokic, 62 36 62. The final round of qualifying was also completed on Monday with Olga Savchuk, Lucie Safarova, Martina Muller and Henrieta Nagyova reaching the main draw. This is the seventh straight year that Estoril has served as a stop on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's clay court season. The event was played in 1989 and 1990 and then returned as a permanent event on the Tour in 1999. Among the former winners at this tournament are Katarina Srebotnik, Anke Huber, Angeles Montolio, Magui Serna and last year's champion, Emilie Loit.
