Vardan
May 21, 2005 © Istanbul Cup Venus Wins First Istanbul Cup ISTANBUL - Former world No.1 Venus Williams won her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title in over a year on Saturday, defeating rising star Nicole Vaidisova 63 62 in the final of the inaugural Istanbul Cup, a Tier III clay court event held in Istanbul, Turkey. The top-seeded Williams dominated the No.2 seed from the outset, serving well, starting the match aggressively and rushing the net at every opportunity. After Williams raced to a 4-0 lead, Vaidisova broke back and held for 4-2, but there were no more breaks and the American held on convicingly to take the first set in 33 minutes. The second set was much the same, with the 13th-ranked Williams holding on to her own serve while breaking the Czech teenager twice, eventually taking the match in one hour and 10 minutes to claim her 32nd career title, and seventh on clay. "I played against four very different styles of players this week, which is good preparation for me," said Williams on her week in Istanbul. "Nicole is a very good player who's only going to get better. I really enjoyed playing against her, especially in the long rallies." "Venus was just too good today," said the 39th-ranked Vaidisova, who was facing Williams for the first time. "I was making lots of mistakes, but that was largely because I was forced into shots I don't normally have to make. It's been a good week for me. Of course I'm disappointed to lose today, but it's my first claycourt final and I'm glad that I'm improving on this surface." It will be the fifth time that Williams heads into a Grand Slam after winning a tune-up event the week before, and the first time heading into Roland Garros. The American won at New Haven the week before the US Open four straight times between 1999 and 2002. Twice she went on to win the US Open, in 2000 and 2001, and the other times she didn't do too badly, reaching the semifinals in 1999 and the final in 2002. "It's great to win my first tournament of the year, especially on the eve of a Grand Slam," said the two-time former Wimbledon and US Open champion. "I'm going to go into Roland Garros with lots of confidence, and after four good matches on clay." Previous to this week, it had been over a year since Williams had won her last event, which came at Warsaw last May. She has looked impressive all week in Istanbul, routing 117th-ranked Spaniard Marta Marrero 60 60 in her opening round, and easing past 60th-ranked Russian Anna Chakvetadze 62 61 in Thursday's quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Williams defeated 220th-ranked qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 61 63. Vaidisova was playing in her third career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour final, and her biggest one yet. She had already won titles last year at the Tier V event in Vancouver and the Tier IV in Tashkent. She began her week with a 62 63 win over 212th-ranked Croatian qualifier Ivana Abramovic, then almost let a 5-2 second set lead slip away in the quarterfinals before closing out 46th-ranked German Anna-Lena Groenefeld 75 76(6). In the semifinals, Vaidisova dropped the first set against No.3 seed Anna Smashnova of Israel before storming back to win 46 61 60. A milestone was reached on Saturday as Williams set a new season record for fewest games lost in winning a Tour singles title. The previous record of 27, set by Ana Ivanovic at Canberra and matched by Flavia Pennetta at Bogota and Kim Clijsters at Miami, was shattered by Williams, who lost just 12 games en route to the title this week. It is the fewest games lost since Elena Likhovtseva won at Forest Hills last August after losing just 11 games en route to the title. Saturday's match also marked just the second time this season that the top two seeds played for the title, after the Tokyo [Pan Pacific] final between top seed Lindsay Davenport and second seed Maria Sharapova, which Sharapova won in a third-set tie-break. In the doubles final, No.4 seeds Marrero and Antonella Serra Zanetti defeated unseeded Austrian sisters Daniela and Sandra Klemenschits 64 60 in 52 minutes. It was the second career Tour doubles title for each of the winners, with Marrero also winning at Sopot last year with Nuria Llagostera Vives, and Serra Zanetti also winning at Tashkent last year with sister Adriana. Earlier, No.10 Justine Henin-Hardenne extended her win streak to 18 matches with a 60 46 64 win over Conchita Martinez. Vardan
May 24, 2005 Justine Needs Three Sets in Round One PARIS - Already a force to be reckoned with on the clay, 2003 Roland Garros champion Justine Henin-Hardenne increased her clay court winning streak to 18 by defeating Conchita Martinez in the first round of Roland Garros. With a scoreline of 60 46 64, Henin-Hardenne was quick to take the first set. However, former Wimbledon champion Martinez displayed her mental toughness and fought back to take the second set 64. In the end it was Henin-Hardenne who clinched the final set, taking one step forward in her quest to regain the Roland Garros title. Both players had 14 winners in the final set, but Henin-Hardenne's 11 unforced errors compared to Martinez's 19 helped escalate Henin-Hardenne as the winner in the close third set. Reflecting on the match, Henin-Hardenne stated, "I played extremely well in the first set, probably one of the best sets I've ever played." "She (Martinez) was in the court in the second set. With her big forehand, I had a lot of trouble. It was windy out there also. So at the end finally I can win, and that's the best thing for me to do. It wasn't easy. But I did expect this kind of match." Two veteran seeds were upset early on Day 2, Ai Sugiyama and Paola Suarez. Sugiyama encountered Nuria Llagostera Vives, who has had recent success on the clay, winning the Rabat title a few weeks ago. Llagosterva Vives had a difficult time against the former Top 10 Japanese player, eventually winning 63 46 64. 2004 Roland Garros semifinalist Paola Suarez has been hindered all season by injury, as her opponent, Russian Anna Chakvetadze, took advantage, 75 16 60. Chakvetadze has reached at least the third round in all three of her career Grand Slam events. Frenchwoman Severine Beltrame and Australian Samantha Stosur recorded their first-ever victories at Roland Garros. Beltrame, who recently received her law degree from the University of Law of Montpellier upset higher-ranked Abigail Spears, 63 61. Stosur also cruised to victory, beating Silvija Talaja 61 62. No.6 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova lost only two games in her opening match, defeating French wildcard Mathilde Johansson 61 61. She will meet qualifier Sofia Arvidsson in the next round, who upset Eleni Daniilidou 61 76(1).

Vardan
May 24, 2005 Sharapova, Mauresmo Advance to Second Round in Paris PARIS - For the second straight day, a top seed has battled through a three set match in order to advance to the second round at Roland Garros. Much like world No.1 Lindsay Davenport on Monday, No.2 seed Maria Sharapova was also dealt a three-set affair in her opening round in Paris, climbing back from a set down to defeat Evgenia Linetskaya, 67(3) 62 64. "I really thought these are the sort of matches I play for," Sharapova said. "I would have loved to win 1 and 0. That would have been great. But when you come off the court and you feel like you were losing the whole match, and all of a sudden you pulled it out, it's those moments that you feel you've trained for and you work hard for." Yesterday, Davenport was also forced to comeback after dropping the first set against Katarina Srebotnik, eventually defeating the Slovenian, 36 62 62. After leveling the match at a set apiece, Sharapova also had to roar back from a 3-1 deficit in the third set. Linetskaya was also just a point away from increasing her lead to 4-1. "When you're down a break in the third, you're just begging for mercy," Sharapova said. "But I just tried to fight it out and tried to find a way, just an opening. As the third set went on, I thought the conditions were a little lighter and the ball flew faster. I was able to hit shots that she wasn't able to run down." The Wimbledon champion, who reached the quarterfinals last year in Paris, will take on French wildcard Aravane Rezai in the second round. Rezai defeating countrywoman Camille Pin for a spot in the final 64. "I felt good on the court today," Mauresmo said. "I felt that really my game was pretty strong, pretty consistent. From the beginning till the end, I stayed really focused on what I had to do." Meanwhile, No.3 seed Amelie Mauresmo wasted no time moving on at Roland Garros, coasting past Evie Dominikovic, 62 61. The Frenchwoman improved to 18-10 all-time at the event, but is still looking to move beyond the quarterfinals for the first time. She has reached the final eight the past two seasons on the Paris clay. Fellow Frenchwoman and No.13 seed Nathalie Dechy also eased into the next round with a 61 64 victory against Michaela Pastikova. Dechy will next face Samantha Stosur, a 61 62 winner against Silvija Talaja. "I think 90 percent of the match was really good, and then at the end I kind of got nervous a little bit and stopped playing my game," Dechy said. "So it started to be a little more difficult for me. I think like on 90 percent of the match, it was really good and I was playing really well, so I'm pretty happy about the way I played today." No.7 seed Nadia Petrova also looked strong in her first outing of the week, defeating American Mashona Washington, 64 62. Petrova will be up against French opposition in her second round match when she faces Severine Beltrame, a 63 61 winner against Abigail Spears. After failing to win a match in her first two trips to Roland Garros, No.17 seed Tatiana Golovin won her first match at the event, defeating Lilia Osterloh, 60 62. She will next face Antonella Serra Zanetti, a 62 64 winner against Marlene Weingartner. Other seeds moving on include No.22 Francesca Schiavone and No.29 Ana Ivanovic, while No.15 seed Jelena Jankovic could only muster three games in a 60 63 loss to Israeli veteran Anna Smashnova. Also advancing were Strasbourg winner Anabel Medina Garrigues, who dropped just one game against Petra Mandula, 60 61 and Istanbul runner-up Nicole Vaidisova, who rallied back for a 46 60 64 victory against lucky loser Lucie Safarova, who won a clay court title in April at Estoril. Davenport was two points away from defeat on Wednesday before pulling out a 36 76(4) 60 win against China's Shuai Peng. Vardan
May 25, 2005 Dementieva, Venus Surge Ahead at Roland Garros PARIS - Reigning Roland Garros runner-up Elena Dementieva won her second round match in Paris defeating Sanda Mamic 76(7) 62. Mamic put up a fight in the first set but once Dementieva secured the tie-break, Mamic was unable to stay at the Russian's level. "I think it was a tough match, but I'm glad I could finish in two sets," Dementieva stated. Dementieva admitted she had a tough time with Mamic's left-handed style of play. "I think she was playing a lot of spin balls," Dementieva said. "It was not easy that she's left handed. She was using her left wrist a lot. I think I was not aggressive enough as I usually do in the court. She just took advantage of my short balls." Dementieva will face Japan's Akiko Morigami in the third round, an upset winner over No.31 seed Karolina Sprem 75 63. If all goes according to the seed's plan, Dementieva could potentially face Venus Williams in the quarterfinals, but the two rounds it takes to get to the quarterfinals will be quite challenging for both. Williams sustained a tough challenge in her match against Fabiola Zuluaga before winning 63 36 63. The variety and strategic clay court play of Zuluaga was good preparation for Williams, who is looking to return to the finals once again, after falling to her sister Serena in 2002. Venus remarked, "It was a challenging match, but I think the best part is that she's a player with variety, so sometimes she's hitting harder and sometimes she's hitting with more spin. So I got to see everything which I'll see throughout the rest of the tournament." Williams will next face 15-year-old Sesil Karatantcheva, who recorded an upset of her own on Wednesday, defeating No.19 seed Shinobu Asagoe 75 62. Karatantcheva advances to her first third round at a Grand Slam, in only her third appearance. 2000 Roland Garros champion Mary Pierce blazed to victory, letting go of only one game against Jelena Kostanic, 60 61. The French crowd-favorite Pierce will meet No.9 seed Vera Zvonareva in the third round. In contrast to Pierce, Zvonareva needed three sets to advance against qualifier Eva Birnerova, 46 64 60. Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi recorded her 300th win in Paris and advances to the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in her 11-year career. Gagliardi defeated Maria Sanchez Lorenzo, 63 63, who took out defending champion Anastasia Myskina on Monday. Gagliardi and France's Emilie Loit will square off in the next round, Loit taking out No.27 seed Amy Frazier 64 64.
