The motto of this year´s KinderKulturKarawane has been taken from a song of the 1985 BAND AID project. In 1985, all over the world people were fighting against the famine in Africa. In Germany, a ”Day for Africa” was initiated by the media. German pop and rock bands gave a big concert. The song for the ”Day for Africa” had been written by Wolfgang Niedecken of the Cologne band BAP. Its title was ”Nackt im Wind” (Naked in the wind).

In the US, Harry Belafonte was the first to come up with the idea of collecting money for Africa by organising a concert of black musicians. Ken Kragen, however, thought it would be better to launch an American version of ”Band Aid”. Kragen worked as manager and TV producer. He told one of his clients, Lionel Ritchie, about the idea. Ritchie´s wife talked to Stevie Wonder´s wife, who in turn was able to convince her husband to join the project. Quincy Jones agreed to be the producer. The text of the song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie. The actual recording took place on the night of the presentation of the American Music Award (28 January 1985) in order to ensure that everybody would be able to participate.

The music was recorded beforehand and sent to the singers. With it came a note asking everybody to decide whether or not they really wanted to participate. The recording itself proved to be no problem for the professional musicians. On 7 March 1985, 800,000 copies of the single were brought on the market and sold out by the following week-end. On 23 March 1985, the single entered the ”Billboard Hot 100” as number 21, which, aside from John Lennon´s ”Imagine”, was the best result ever for a newcomer. Three weeks later, the song was number 1 of the charts. In 1985, it received grammies and the two awards ”Record of the year” and ”Song of the year”.

Below you can find the song´s text and the names of the participating singers. The first two lines of the chorus are extremely important for us, because they represent the motto of the caravan and the spirit of the project. When the song was written, there was more to it than just an appeal for donations. It was about the responsibility we all share for our common future and the special role that artists play in this respect.

”We are the world, we are the children, we are the ones to make a better world…” The children and young people of KinderKulturKarawane live this motto with the necessary self-confidence.
