Off The Clay And On To Grass

The grass season has officially begun, as Day One was completed at the DFS Classic in Birmingham. Seeds Samantha Stosur (pictured), Evgenia Linetskaya and Virginie Razzano all advanced to the second round, while No.13 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld served as the first casualty, losing 64 63 to Stephanie Foretz. Britain's Elena Baltacha also advanced to the second round, 76(9) 61 over Alyona Bondarenko.

World No.2 and reigning Wimbledon and Birmingham champion Maria Sharapova makes her 2005 grass debut on Tuesday, as she takes on Anne Kremer.

Sharapova Taken To Three Sets By Stosur

World No.2 Maria Sharapova has had her first real test of the grasscourt season, taken to three sets Thursday by No.16 seed Samantha Stosur in the third round of the DFS Classic in Birmingham. Sharapova, the defending champion here and at Wimbledon, outlasted the big-serving Australian, 63 36 61.

A host of unseeded players have advanced to the quarterfinals with Tamarine Tanasugarn, Laura Granville, Anna Chakvetadze and Mashona Washington progressing so far on Day 4. The $200,000 DFS Classic is the first warm-up event in the lead-up to Wimbledon.
