Seeds Samantha Stosur (pictured), Evgenia Linetskaya and Virginie Razzano all advanced to the second round, while No.13 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld served as the first casualty, losing 64 63 to Stephanie Foretz. Britain's Elena Baltacha also advanced to the second round, 76(9) 61 over Alyona Bondarenko. Sharapova, the defending champion here and at Wimbledon, outlasted the big-serving Australian, 63 36 61. A host of unseeded players have advanced to the quarterfinals with Tamarine Tanasugarn, Laura Granville, Anna Chakvetadze and Mashona Washington progressing so far on Day 4.
