Vardan
Wimbledon June 24, 2005 Safin Bows Out; Hewitt and Dent Clash Spaniard Feliciano Lopez stunned No.5 seed Marat Safin, 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-3, in the third round of Wimbledon. The Russian, who had been showing a solid grass court game lately, lost to an inspired Lopez who never trailed throughout the entire match. With the win, Lopez advances to the fourth round and faces No.10 seed Mario Ancic. Lopez has now reached Wimbledon's fourth round for the third time in his last four appearances. Lopez, who has lost only one set in three matches, went 2-for-2 on break point conversions and hit 14 aces, eight more than the 2005 Australian Open champion. Australian Lleyton Hewitt also advanced to the fourth round with a straight set win over American Justin Gimelstob, 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-5. The match featured only two service breaks -both for Hewitt - and had exciting rallies with Gimelstob diving for volleys and the Australian hitting precise passing shots. Hewitt now faces American Taylor Dent who had a comfortable win over the Czech Tomas Berdych, 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-3. Dent’s Wimbledon fourth round appearance is a career’s best. Hewitt and Dent have faced each other in the second round of the 2001 Wimbledon edition with the Australian winning in five sets.
