In a mouth-watering start to the knockout stages of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, the Round of 16 gets under way this Saturday with a top-class European derby and a Latin American clásico. Sweden take on hosts Germany in Munich before Argentina challenge Mexico in Leipzig. All four sides know a flash of genius or a fatal lapse in concentration could seal their fate in an instant.

The matches

Germany-Sweden, 17:00 (CET), Munich

The Mannschaft reassured a sceptical nation with a faultless journey though the group stage, scoring eight goals along the way, including four for Miroslav Klose. Even their defence, considered the weak link before a ball was kicked, grew stronger in every match. Jurgen Klinsmann’s boys will need to be wary of a Sweden side that also improved as the first round went on. Second in Group B, the Scandinavians recovered from their scoreless draw with Trinidad and Tobago to beat Paraguay 1-0 and grab a dramatic 2-2 draw against England.

Argentina-Mexico, 21:00, Leipzig

Argentina coach Jose Pekerman raised eyebrows by leaving experienced campaigners like Juan Sebastian Veron at home, but his tightly-knit group of players caught fire in the group stage. While many are tipping them to lift the famous Trophy, they will have to overcome bogey team Mexico to keep their dream alive. The first FIFA World Cup game between the two old foes dates back to 19 July 1930, a match the Albiceleste won 6-3. From a total of 23 meetings, Argentina have triumphed just eight times, with Mexico winning four and the other 11 ending in a draw. The signs are that this Mexico side could cause anyone problems. Finishing runners-up behind Portugal in Group D, El Tri showed flashes of the same eye-catching football they displayed at last year’s FIFA Confederations Cup, where they beat Brazil early on and pushed Argentina to the limit in the semi-finals.

The duel

Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez is nothing less than Mexico’s control tower, directing traffic and snuffing out danger. He will certainly have his work cut out keeping track of the fleet-footed former Barça forward Javier Saviola, who has timed his return to form to perfection.

The absentees

Luis Perez (Mexico), two yellow cards.

Past meetings

West Germany-Sweden, 30 June 1974, Dusseldorf

Old hands on the global stage, Germany and Sweden last contested a FIFA World Cup fixture back in 1974. That game was also held on German soil and at approximately the same stage of the competition (second round), but the Swedes will be praying for a different outcome this time around. West Germany found the back of the net after an hour’s play to settle a tight match, and boast a total of two victories to the Scandinavians' one at this level.

The question

Can the Mexican defence hold out? With danger liable to come from every directions, it remains to be seen whether Ricardo La Volpe’s men can keep this awesome Argentinian line-up quiet. Mexico conceded three times during the group stage and their rearguard could be in for a strenuous workout.

The figures

995: the number of goals scored by Spain, who will be hoping to pass the 1000-mark in Germany.

19: the number of goals scored by Argentina in their 14 meetings with Mexico.

50: the number of Switzerland games overseen by coach Kobi Kuhn, equalling the national record.

Birthdays

24 June 1978 was quite the day for footballers, it seems, as Japan striker Shunsuke Nakamura, Argentina playmaker Juan Riquelme, Spain’s Luis Garcia and Mikael Nilsson of Sweden all turn 28 today. The celebrations do not end there either, since Brazil defender Cicinho is 26 and Argentinian prodigy Lionel Messi hits 19.

A FIFA World Cup blast from the past

24 June 1958, Brazil 5-2 France, Stockholm

Five days after opening his FIFA World Cup account against Wales, Pele destroyed semi-final opponents France with his first-ever finals' hat-trick. A legend was in the making, and would gather even more pace thanks to two goals against hosts Sweden in the Final.

Not a lot of people know this…

Fair play is alive and well at this FIFA World Cup, thanks in no small part to Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech. After Argentinian referee Horacio Elizondo booked Ghana's Asamoah Gyan for taking a penalty before the whistle, Cech stepped in to defend his opponent. “He took it because he heard a whistle from somewhere behind the goal. He’s innocent,” explained the Chelsea shot-stopper in vain.

Having a laugh

Jurgen Klinsmann: "We mustn’t be eliminated – we’re a football nation. Even a quarter-final exit would be a catastrophe.”
