I had the opportunity to ask someone else yesterday, and he interpreted it as being a rectangular Caucasian hat, which Bakunts uses to describe the shape of the precipices (քերծեր). In modern terms նախարար = "minister". "Duke" is a specific title and it has its own verbatim traslation in Armenian: դուքս. As I understand the issue, translating նախարար as "prince" is absolutely illegal as far as "prince" is the person who inherits the autority. In simple words, he is the son of the king. The նախարար in contrast is from different family, although he can claim the kingdom in case when whole king's family is lost. From that point of view նախարար is similar to "duke" The interesting point is that what you say depends on the period of Armenian history. In older Armenia of Arshakids the nakharars DID inherit the given function in the state. The military nakharar was a Mamikonian, the Palace nakharar was a Bagratouni, etc… In Cilician Armenia, on the contrary, being a nakharar was a “job” in Western sense: nakharars didn’t have to belong to a particular family. Actually, this is a simple matter of semantics, and not a matter of history, or a subject of European medieval hereditary law. The word “prince” in English is used as a generic definition for local feudal rulers in any country, in any culture and time.
