The people are, so is the music. Greece went through this process. So shall we, and so should you quite honestly. Granted Greece had time since 1829, and since then they purged most of the oriental influences from their culture even though they still use some semitic & turkish words they have done a pretty good job at everything else. We had a little more than decade. Just starting.

Genuine 100% Armenian music! This is one of my favorite folk bands from Gyumri called Bambir. Doni Yar Bari Louso Komitas I Shepherd's Dog Speaking of Celts, there is an Armenian ethnic group in occupied Anatolia who are known as Galacs. They are Galatians assimilated by Armenians and they speak a unique Armenian dialect with Gaelic influences. Grapar in its pure form also sounds like a cross between Greek and Gaelic. Mesmerizing. Galac Armenian: "heyr sirdes to galac mayr u elbayr...holund u odeir eir" Which means: love your ethnic mother and brother, descendants of your land.

rabiz = arab/turk garbage Genuine Armenian music is virtually extinct. Actual Armenian folks songs are reminiscent of Greek and Celtic folk music.

John I "Tzimisces" Kourkouas Ιωάννης "Τζιμισκής" Κουρκούας Հովհանես "Չմշկիկ" Կուոկուաս John I, last name Kourkouas and surnamed Tzimisces, lived c. 925 - January 10, 976 and was Byzantine emperor from December 11, 969 to January 10, 976. He was born c. 925 to a father belonging to the Kourkouas family and to a mother belonging to the Phocas family. Both were distinguished Cappadocian families of Armenian origin, and among the most prominent of the emerging military aristocracy of Asia Minor. Several of their members had served as prominent army generals, including the brother of John's mother, Nicephorus Phocas. Contemporary sources describe John as a rather short but well-built man, with reddish blonde hair and beard and blue eyes who was attractive to women. He seems to have joined the army at an early age, originally under the command of his maternal uncle Nicephorus. The latter is also considered his instructor in the art of war. Partly because of his familiar connections and partly because of his personal abilities, John quickly rose through the ranks. He was given the political and military command of the province of Armenia before he turned twenty-five years old. At the time the Empire was at war with its eastern neighbor, the Abbasid Empire. Armenia served as the border between the two Empires. John managed to successfully defend his province. He and his troops joined the main part of the army, which was campaigning against the enemy under the command of Nicephorus. Nicephorus means "bearer of victory" and Phocas justified his name with a series of victories, moving the borders further east with the capture of about 60 border cities including Aleppo. By 962, the Abbasids had asked for a peace treaty with favorable terms for Byzantines, that secured the borders for some years. John distinguished himself during the war both at the side of his uncle and at leading parts of the army to battle under his personal command. He was rather popular with his troops and gained a reputation for taking the initiative during battles, turning their course. He was regarded by some as a military hero. On March 15, 963, Emperor Romanus II unexpectedly died at the age of twenty-six. The cause of his death is uncertain. Both contemporary sources and later historians seem to either believe that the young Emperor had exhausted his health with the excesses of his sexual life and his heavy drinking, or suspect Empress Theophano (c. 941 - after 976), his wife, of poisoning him. Theophano had already at the time gained a reputation as an intelligent and ambitious woman. She would later gain a reputation for ruthlesness in achieving her goals. Romanus had, before his death, already crowned as co-emperors his two sons, the later Emperors Basil II and Constantine VIII. At the time, however, Basil was five years old and Constantine only three years old, and they were not able to assume the duties that came with their title. Theophano was named regent. But she wasn't allowed to rule alone. Joseph Bringas, a eunuch palace official who had become Romanus' chief council, maintained his position. According to contemporary sources he intended to keep the authority to take decisions for the actual matters of importance at his own hands, rather than those of the young Empress. He also tried to remove part of the authority that had been concentrated at the hands of Nicephorus Phocas. The victorious general had been accepted as the actual commander of the army and maintained his strong connections to the aristocracy. Joseph was afraid that Nicephorus could claim the throne with the support of both the army and the aristocracy. Joseph's intrigues during the following months turned both Theophano and Nicephorus against him. Unknown to Joseph, Theophano and Nicephorus had started negotiations with each other. After helping his maternal uncle to obtain the throne as Nicephorus II and to restore the empire's eastern provinces, he was deprived of his command by an intrigue, upon which he retaliated by conspiring with Nicephorus' wife Theophania to assassinate him. Elected ruler in his stead, John proceeded to justify his usurpation by the energy with which he repelled the foreign invaders of the empire. In a series of campaigns against the newly established Russian power (970-973) he drove the enemy out of Thrace, crossed Mt. Haemus and besieged the fortress of Dorystolon on the Danube. In several hard-fought battles he broke the strength of the Russians so completely that they left him master of eastern Bulgaria. He further secured his northern frontier by transplanting to Thrace some colonies of Paulicians whom he suspected of sympathising with their Saracen neighbours in the east. In 974 he turned against the Abbasid empire and easily recovered the inland parts of Syria and the middle reaches of the Euphrates. He died suddenly in 976 on his return from his second campaign against the Saracens. John's surname was apparently derived from the Armenian tshemshkik, meaning "red boot".

Michael Vartan Nephew of Sylvie Vartan. Cousin of French singer David Hallyday. Son of Eddie Vartan Dating Alias co-star Jennifer Garner People Magazine is onboard the Vartan fan club and chose him as one of the Sexiest Men Alive for 2003. The green-eyed hunk joked at the honor, “It’s amazing how much better looking I’ve gotten since I’ve been on Alias. I didn’t have that many female fans when I was 19 years old and working as a waiter.” Born in France, Vartan was raised in both France and America. His American mother and Armenian father—brother of famed French singer, Sylvie Vartan—split when he was only five. A high school dropout, he permanently settled in L.A. at the age of 18—to avoid French military service—and took acting classes to hone a talent family and friends already spotted. Now 35 years old, Vartan’s career spans two continents and he’s got a knack for working with some of the most celebrated names in the biz. His first lucky break was in the Italian film, Fiorile (1993) which garnered him a French Caesar award nomination as best up-and-coming actor. Stateside he played a minor role in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), but his breakthrough came with The Pallbearer (1996) starring David Schwimmer and Gwyneth Paltrow. That initial exposure paved the path to roles in Never Been Kissed (1999) opposite Drew Barrymore, The Next Best Thing (2000) as Madonna’s prickly first husband, and even One Hour Photo (2002) with Robin Williams, where his nude scene had The Straits Times of Singapore declare, “Vive le Vartan!” Vartan is climbing into the upper strata of Hollywood celebrity doing all the right projects and even dating the right people—in his case Alias co-star, Jennifer Garner. The Michael Vartan frenzy is certainly only beginning, but the real test will be if he can pull off the challenge of a complex role considering he is being typecast in endless pretty boy roles. Until that day, Vartan will just have to be satisfied with the admiration of his fans the world over.

Captain US Marine Corps VICTOR MAGHAKIAN As a Marine gunnery sergeant, Victor Maghakian participated in some of the bloodiest fighting in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of Lt. Col. Evans F. Carlson's famed Second raider Battalion and participated in a raid on a Japanese garrison on Makin Island, August 17, 1942. Maghakian was the first casualty of the landing force during the raid but insisted on returning to the front after receiving medical Aid. The invasion was later the basis of the movie "Gung Ho." For Maghakian's skill and bravery, he was awarded the Navy Cross, second only to the Medal of Honor in importance. In December, 1942, he was wounded again as his battalion battled the Japanese in the Solomon' Islands. He was discharged from active service in 1946 as a captain. He returned to Fresno and later lived in Las Vegas where he served on the Nevada State Game Control Board. Maghakian, who died in 1977, was one of the most decorated soldiers in World War II, receiving over two dozen medals for heroism including two Silver Stars, the Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts.

Excerpts from "The Contribution of Armenians to the 20th Century Culture" Natural Sciences and Technology Since early history Armenians were known as skilled merchants that travelled far and wide which made them conversant in astronomy, geography, and mathematics. Thousands of years ago Armenians domesticated wild wheat and apricots. As early as the 9th century BC they cultivated grapes and made wine. Armenians processed metal already in the 6th millennia BC. One of the oldest Armenian states, The Nairi Araratian Kingdom (Urartu called by Assyrians & Armina by Greeks and Persians) came into being in the 9th century BC. Armenian culture flourished anew in the 20th century. Physiologist Levon Orbeli was Ivan Pavlov's closest associate and one of the founders of evolutionary physiology. With the advent of the Space Age Norayr Sissakian advanced the Soviet program of cosmic biology and medicine. Luigi Camician developed photochemistry. Chemist Ivan Knunyants made discoveries in photo-organic chemistry and synthesized capron, which was widely used in the industry. Nikoghayos Yenikopelian, a renowned physical chemist, made important discoveries of synthetic polymers. Vassil Tahirov upgraded viticulture in Armenia to a science and blended the first brandies that earned world-wide recognition. Astrophysicist Viktor Hambartsoumian succeeded Orbeli as the president of the Armenian Academy of Sciences and made substantial breakthroughs in the modern understanding of the evolution of the universe. Abraham Alikhanov was among the pillars of Soviet school of nuclear physics. He was one of the creators of the first heavy water nuclear reactor in the USSR. Samvel Kochariants was for many the mastermind behind three generations of Soviet nuclear weaponry. Sargis Saltikov developed new alloys and the discipline of stereometric metallurgy. Andranik Hovsepian was the pioneer of Soviet electrotechnical engineering, he was responsible for electrical guts of most rockets and designed Soviet Meteor meteorological satellites. Artem Mikoyan was the chief designer and founder of several generations of MIG jet fighters that ensured Soviet air domination in the 50's and continued to protect the borders several decades thereafter.

GEORGE MARDIKIAN George Mardikian's interest in the welfare of the American soldier led him to volunteer his time and energy in an effort to improve the food service for combat troops in Korea. For his "selfless devotion to his mission and his singular accomplishments" to the success of the Armed Forces, Mardikian was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian award. A portion of the citation reads, "with vigorous energy, keen powers of observation and analysis and a dynamic personality, he enlisted the enthusiastic interest of commanders and soldiers alike in the preparation and service of food under varying conditions in the combat zone." Mardikian would accept no pay for his services. At age 15, he had been imprisoned in Turkey. He escaped and sailed to America in steerage at age 18 and was soon working as a dishwasher in a San Francisco speakeasy.. He eventually bought the place and built it into the renowned Omar Khayyam restaurant. "I was born on November 7, but I celebrate my birthday on July 24" he said. "That's the day I began to live, the day I saw the Statue of Liberty."
