According to the Armenian traffic police, a total of some 53,000 vehicles were imported to the country, mainly from Russia and Western Europe, between 2003 and 2005. Police officials say approximately 20,000 of them were brought in and sold last year, a new post-Soviet record. The National Statistical Service puts their combined monetary value at $95 million. Some police officials have said only that it has surpassed the late Soviet-era level. “According to our information, the figure is close to 300,000,” said Eduard Hovannisian, chairman of the Achilles non-governmental organizations representing the interests of Armenian motorists. “Demand in cars has increased,” said Mkhitar Mikaelian, a sales manager at Armenia-Lada, the country’s largest car dealership. “This is due to the growth of the middle class and rising revenues of wealthy persons.” Most of the cars are believed to be concentrated in Yerevan where traffic has grown much heavier in recent years. Traffic jams during rush hours are now an increasingly serious problem, especially in the city center. The police say the rising number of cars also means more traffic accidents both in the Armenian capital and other parts of the country. Second-hand European-made cars, cheap by Western standards, cars account for much of Armenian vehicle imports. But according to Mikaelian, the share of brand new Western cars in the imports has been steadily growing. “There is now greater demand in the kind of cars which many people here considered a luxury a few years ago,” he said, singling out SUVs that have until now been the preserve of wealthy Armenians.

The demands are four: to restart the cases against organizers and executors of the massacre in Sumgait and Baku, condemnation of the cynical fact of declaring the Azeri murdered a hero, immediate cessation of cultural vandalism in the territories of Jugha and Nakhijevan and bringing Azerbaijan to account for belligerent position of Azerbaijan, its agitation of racism and violation against Armenian people.

It said exports made $950.4 million and imports stood at $1.768 billion. The trade balance was negative with $817 million. Without counting humanitarian assistance it was $777.3 million. The share of trade with CIS countries was $690.3 million or 25.4 percent. Trade with these countries grew last year 35 percent. Trade balance with CIS was negative-40.5 percent. The biggest trade partner was Russia with $353 million turnover, followed by Ukraine-$137.7 million. Trade with EU countries made 34.8 percent and grew 58 percent to $946.2 million. The biggest European trade partner was Germany, whose share was 10 percent, followed by Belgium-9.9 percent. The Statistical Committee also said export of precious and semi-precious items grew 12.4 percent making $336.4 million, import of such items also grew 19.2 percent reaching $347.6 million.

Evans said a recent gas crisis in Georgia has shown that the system of gas supplies is very fragile. "We are watching closely related developments in Armenia, Georgia, and Ukraine. The US believes that the gas price should be determined by the market, but not geo-politics," he said.
